The Bushwick Starr is currently raising funds and support for our Spring project:

THE BUSHWHACK SERIES
Produced by The Bushwick Starr

In May 2008, we are inaugurating The Bushwhack Series- a weeklong theater festival devoted to the development of new work within the neighborhood of Bushwick. The Bushwhack Series will provide our invited groups-- both emerging and established performance artists-- with a unique venue and audience, and a chance to develop new work in a supportive environment. It is also an opportunity for us to bring vital and exciting performances to the growing arts community in Bushwick.

Approximately five performing artists/groups will present new and developing work within this festival. This year’s participating artists work in experimental theater, dance theater, multi-media, and puppetry, and include: The National Theater of the United States of America (NTUSA), Amanda Maddock, Ann and Alexx Make Dances, Chris Ajemian, and Bushwick’s own ConLab.

The Bushwick Starr will work directly with these artists to fully facilitate their artistic explorations and needs. Each group is provided with: free rehearsal space; access to our full technical package; the support of our on-site Technical Director and Staff; the opportunity to work with the Starr’s resident designers; a weekend of public performances; and a project stipend.

We have already begun a rigorous pre-production schedule, focusing on fundraising, advance planning, and publicity. In January 2008, The Bushwick Starr was fortunate enough to be awarded a grant towards The Bushwhack Series from the DCA (NYC Dept. of Cultural Affairs) through the Brooklyn Arts Council. However, the funds we received only represent a fraction of our total budget. In addition to administrative and advertising/promotion expenses, our main focus is to pay the artists involved in this festival. It is very important to us to support our invited performing groups, the designers, and our staff for all the work and development that will happen between now and May. Our hope is to raise the remainder of our budget by April 2008.

We turn to you, or community of friends, family, and audience members, to ask for further support for this project.

At the heart of our mission and goals for The Bushwhack Series is a desire to celebrate what is unique and special about our arts community. We hope this festival will be a platform to share that with the larger NYC area.
